A piece of driftwood that washed ashore on the coast of Ishinomaki, where I was born and raised, was cast in concrete. Measuring over seven meters in length, the driftwood came to rest on a beach now separated from the town by a concrete seawall built after the tsunami. Crossing the six-meter-high barrier, the log was transported by truck from Ishinomaki to my studio in Chiba.
Gradually shaped through its passage across sea and land, the driftwood bears the traces of slow erosion. Its form is then transcribed in concrete—the material that underpins and structures the contemporary city. How long did this piece of wood drift before reaching the shore? By bringing together the immeasurable time embodied in the driftwood and the seemingly fixed, enduring temporality of concrete, the work transforms into a sculpture that marks a point of intersection where different times converge and where the landscape continues to change, slowly and without end.

生まれ育った石巻の海岸に流れ着いた流木をコンクリートで型取りをした。全長7 メートルを上回る流木が漂着した砂浜はコンクリートで固められた防潮堤によって隔てられた場所に位置している。高さ6 メートルほどの防潮堤を越え、運び出された流木は車で石巻から千葉県のスタジオへと辿り着く。海と陸を漂い緩やかに侵食された流木。そのフォルムは都市を支える骨格とも言えるコンクリートによってなぞられる。どれくらいだろうか海を漂い漂着した流木の時間と、固定化と感じさせられるほどのコンクリートの時間を重ねる事で風景がゆっくりと変化し続ける時間の交差点のような彫刻へと変換する。
